I got it in the latest MacUpdate bundle and was wondering if it's really better (and why) than OSX's builtin security stuff.
 
that depends on your definition of better.
Does it do it's job better? Doubtful. A packet either is or isn't allowed, and it's all in the configuration of the firewall.
Is it more configurable? Probably (I haven't looked at it).

In the end, WaterRoof is a really great GUI frontend for ipfw at a fraction of the price.
