Apple and esteemed talk show host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey today announced the launch of Oprah's Book Club in the Apple Books app.

Oprah's Book Club can be accessed in the Apple Books app under Book Store > Browse Sections on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Winfrey's first book selection is "The Water Dancer" by Ta-Nehisi Coates, available for pre-order now on Apple Books in both e-book and audiobook formats ahead of its debut tomorrow.

For every Oprah's Book Club selection sold on Apple Books, Apple says it will make a contribution to the American Library Association to support local libraries and fund programs that give access to everyone.

Winfrey will interview the authors of her book club selections for a companion Apple TV+ series also named Oprah's Book Club. Winfrey will interview Coates for the first installment of the series, which premieres November 1, the day that Apple TV+ launches across iOS, macOS, tvOS, and the web.

Winfrey will interview the authors of her book club selections at various locations. Her conversation with Coates about "The Water Dancer" will be filmed in front of a live audience at Apple's Carnegie Library store in Washington, D.C. next month. A new episode will be available every two months.

Oprah Winfrey:
I am who I am today because of the experience of learning to read at an early age. Reading opened up a whole world for me beyond the red dirt road and my grandmother's porch in Mississippi. I want to do that for everybody. And the opportunity to do this with Apple, to speak to people all over the world about the pleasures, the excitement, the tension, the drama that a good book can bring you ... I don't know what's better than that.
Apple CEO Tim Cook:
Few people in the world can bring us together like Oprah, whose compassion and grace celebrating the power of books are unmatched. It's our honor to provide a new platform for Oprah's Book Club and support the American Library Association in opening hearts and minds to the joy of reading.
Oprah's Book Club was first announced at Apple's services-focused event in March.

Update: A new Oprah's Book Club trailer has been released for the novel "American Dirt" by Jeanine Cummins.

Great. Another bad partnership and more proof that the Tim Cook era has been more bad decisions than good ones for Apple, not even discussing the lack of innovation.

I fail to see what is bad about this partnership. Ophrah's Book Club has always been a success, and it shows the link Apple TV will have with other parts of Apple, e.g. Music and Books. But then I guess you would call everything Apple/Tim Cook does bad, regardless of what it is.

I thought Apple was trying to sell this to people, not drive them away?

Nothing on this network is making me even slightly want to hop onboard, and with Oprah on board, it is making me absolutely not want to buy into this.

Wow. This is boring beyond belief. Oprah is a phony, washed-up has-been from the 1990s. More bad moves by Tim Apple. Plus she has a pretty shady past and is involved in some weird NIVXM stuff.

I find the Orpah brand rather corny. Her conglomerate promotes books and products, as if she curates all this stuff herself.

I happen to dislike Oprah. However there are millions upon millions of people like my Mom who adore her. For some people she will be the compelling reason to sign up. No doubt she has green lizard blood running through her veins, however don't under estimate the sheer numbers of reptilians out there.

A month ago, Apple’s TV service was going to cost $9.99 and have only four shows at the start. Now it’s half the price (plus a free year for many), and so far it will premiere with twice the number of shows. Every couple of days they seem to announce another.

Hands down she owned that 4pm slot when she was on TV. Her commercial revenue was insane.

Other than TV, she hasn’t really broken any new ground. She is worth about 2b so I can’t throw stones.

Oprah has a huge number of fans that will drive viewership. Not sure why that triggers some. And Tim Apple is also tremendously successful isn’t he? That sure is upsetting to some in the Apple-hate crowd. The “bad moves” are few and far between, aren’t they? The services strategy in particular is enormously profitable. Can’t wait for the new Mac Pro, glad they didn’t kill it or the mini (Mac and iPad). Thanks Tim Apple!

P.S. What’s a NIVXM and what does it have to do with anything?

Personally I'm indifferent towards her, but nonetheless your comment made me chuckle. I assume you're more of a Dr. Phil fan then? 😉

Say what you will about like/dislike of Oprah and Tim, but the fact that Apple secured her celebrity for their Apple TV+ service was nothing less than a coup. And now they are tying it to their Books business. There are many, many people (particularly women) who will purchase a book simply because it is on the Oprah‘s Book Club list. That Apple has managed to co-opt her celebrity into now selling TWO of their services is an absolutely brilliant move.

It's a good thing for Apple, The lemmings that follow Oprah will buy what ever she tells them to buy... Maybe more Apple products.

It’s a cult that has women brainwashing women into joining, performing sex acts, and branding themselves. If Oprah was involved in some way, that would be disturbing

Bad partnership? I don’t really care for Oprah but I’m aware that she’s the most powerful book influencer in the world. She commands a fan base of hundreds of millions of people who will buy any book she recommends. You’ve gotta be living on another planet to not know that.

This is exactly the type of partnership that could finally kickstart Apple Books after several failed attempts. If I does, it’ll sell tons of iPads and iPhones solidifying the holding power of the Apple ecosystem. Getting Oprah on Books and AppleTV is nothing short of a coup and one of Tim Cook’s most important deals ever.
