opti-bay kit/external DVD drive and now Apple DVD player app wont work

I have taken out my DVD drive and put another hard drive in its place in the optical bay area, the kit I used came with a USB enclosure for the DVD drive so I can still use CD/DVD's. The other day I was going to watch a DVD so I plugged in the external drive and when I put the DVD in I got an error message from the Apple DVD player app calling out an error. I tried to open the Apple DVD player app and I get the same error message, if I use VLC player though I can play the DVD just fine.

Has anyone else experienced this problem once they have taken out there DVD drive?
