Optical audio not used for music

I hooked up my stereo to the optical audio port on my apple tv and it works great for movies and videos on youtube. Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to work with music. The music ends up playing on my tv via the hdmi cable instead. Is there some way to get it to work via the optical audio port instead?
