I purchased an external cd-rom drive for cheap because it was going to cost a lot of money to fix my optical drive...I have a game that will only let me play it if it is inserted in my "Mac CD-Rom"...is there a way to change the default cd-rom to my external instead of my optical drive that is broken?

The normal way is to use Toast to create an image of the disk and then mount it on the desktop. You should be able to use Disk Utility to do the same.
