I've got a Quicksilver 733 Mhz 2001 and the optical drive (Sony CD-RW) won't work properly. It is recognized by the system itself (System Profiler), but it won't speed up discs, and the CD-tray always pops out after a specific time interval. Is it a way to 'reset' or flash this drive to make it work again?

I had a similar problem, but I had no luck in solving it.

I gave up and bought another internal CD-RW drive for it.

I would still be interested in seeing what the problme was though

It seems like it's a problem with this specific drive from Sony. I gave up solving the problem because I couldn't find any solution, so I just bought a new 44x/24x/44x Yamaha CRW-F1 for 80 $. It's working perfectly with iTunes, Discburner and Toast. Thanks to the database on www.xlr8yourmac.com I was able to check if this drive would be supported by the system, and it sure is.
