when my macbook wakes from a sleep or on start-up, it makes this 'ejecting' noise, which sounds like it's checking to see if it can read a disk. When there's a disk in the macbook, it doesn't make the noise.

How do I fix this?

Is there anything wrong with leaving a disk in permanently to prevent this?

It's a highly irritating noise which happens everytime it wakes from sleep (when theres no disk inserted)

Do you have one of these MacBooks?

  • MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
  • MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009)
  • MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)

If so then take a look at this:

:apple: SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0

My early 2008 macbook makes that noise too whenever it's woken up from sleep. I don't know why apple does not fix it. It's annoying and who knows what it's doing to the optical drive.

What are the implications of leaving a blank disk in always (or atleast for the time being) ?

- Lower battery life?
- Fan Always on?
-........?
