I tried posting in the OS X forum last week, but got no response, so I'm going to try it with you guys...

When I plug in a mini-optical cable into the audio-out port on my unibody MacBook Pro the volume icon in the menu bar disappears. That is fine as there is no computer-based volume control possible with optical out.

The problem is that when I unplug the optical cable, the volume icon doesn't reappear. I have to go back in to System Preferences to "show volume in menu bar". I can also do this while the optical cable is plugged in, it's just that the volume slider is greyed out.

Any ideas on how to stop this odd behavior?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
