Planning to buy two new iPhones in the next week or so. We currently have two 13's in good condition I'd like to trade in towards the new 15's. Have had iPhones since the 3G and have always backed them up to our macs. I'm probably doing something wrong but in the past when we have purchased new phones and restored them from an iTunes or Finder backup they usually lack some settings and/or app data compared to the old device. Last time I purchased new phones I transferred directly from one phone to another and that seems to preserve all settings and app data. It seems like a phone to phone transfer is better overall. Given all this I'd appreciate any insights with the following questions:

- is it true or generally agreed that the most seamless way to transfer data from an old phone to a new phone is via a direct transfer?

- can a restore from a Finder backup achieve the same result? If so, are there some special settings or procedure to follow?

- if we want to do a direct transfer from old phone to new phone, I can't trade in the old phones at the Apple Store at the time of purchase, correct? They will only issue a credit after the phone is wiped and in their possession? I can't go back the next day and submit the old phones for a credit towards the purchase of the new phones, correct? I'd have to submit them at the time of purchase?

I think it's time for you to explore iCloud backups and restore from them. also, the benefits of using iCloud to back up all data, including photos and contacts.

ive always used iCloud backups and restores to new phones, and it transfers everything and you can be using the phone in like 20 mins, ive heard phone to phone transfers take longer.

id suggest implementing iCloud as a storage and backup, all your apps restore in the proper locations and you can begin logging into the apps as they download. I think most people no longer use iTunes backups. once you are backed up and restore though iTunes, you can sync to iTunes for any music and movies you need.
