Hello guys,

my iPhone 17 Pro Max is now fifteen days in active use.

optimized charging is set to active since the beginning.

But it’s still charging to 100% directly each night and I can’t seem to stop it doing this.

Did turn it to off for a few seconds and activated it again.

Did a force restart.

Anyone knows when it will eventually do its job and stop charging until the morning ?

If this won’t stop I need to set a charging limit, but I believe that optimized charging is better for my battery than 95% charging limit…

Anyone can help ?

My understanding was that optimized charging holds at 80% until you "need" it, in my case my 17PM holds at 80% til like 3am and it is at 100% when I get up around 5:30am.
My charge limit is off, or 100%.

Thanks guys, from my perspective I have to give it more time, and that’s what I will do.
Just charge it every night and take it off the charger at 7am

Hey! Optimized charging on iPhones doesn’t always kick in immediately—it learns your daily charging habits over a few weeks. Since your iPhone is only 15 days old, it might not have enough data yet to delay charging until the morning.

A few tips:

  • Make sure “Optimized Battery Charging” is enabled in Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
  • Charge at your usual times consistently so the phone can learn your schedule.
  • Sometimes a full restart after a few weeks helps it start working as intended.

If it still charges to 100% immediately after a month, then a manual limit might be worth considering, but usually it self-adjusts over time.

Most bot-like post I've ever seen on this forum.

EDIT: not counting iPhone Air aficionados.

It will always charge to 100% unless you set a Charge Limit (control) right above Optimized Battery Charging. If you always take it off charge at 7 AM, that will be when it tries to complete changing to 100%.

No you don't need to give it more time this is by design. Try this simple test, put it on a charger at some point in the day and it will stop charging at 80%.

I think what they’re describing is their phone is charging straight to 100% when they put it on the charger every night, whereas optimized charging would typically charge to 80, then wait until a couple hours before you normally wake up to charge the rest of the way to 100

It takes awhile for the phone to learn your usage patterns though, possibly this is the problem.

Interesting. I just checked mine, iPhone 17PM, and it’s doing the same thing. Maybe our phones are slow learners? 😁

Didn’t have a problem with my 14PM.

From what I recall, you also need to have significant locations turned on, so that it knows you're at home or your regular charging spot. I have this turned off and mine very rarely does optimised charging. You may have that on (I think it's on by default) but just something else to check

Well this is obvious a requirement, how else would your iPhone be able to develop a schedule of when to charge to 80% and hold unit you normal morning start time to calculate the time required for the remaining 20% or you to your charge limit.

For example if you are out and just want to charge you iPhone, do you want it to always stop at 80%?

Here is what you need to turn back on:
  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn on Location Services.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on System Customization.
  3. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations and turn on Significant Locations.

As obvious as you think it is the phone will still do optimised charging without it, as I mentioned

I’m sure it takes into account more than just location. For example, I only charge my phone at night, and I use the bedtime focus and alarm, so it can easily learn when my scheduled wake up time is daily. In fact, it doesn’t have to learn, it’s right there in my bedtime focus schedule.

And in fact, that’s exactly how my previous phones have behaved: hold 80% until a couple hours before my scheduled wakeup.

Not to mention, on a work trip in a different time zone and different location, the optimized charging has the exact same effect: hold 80% until a couple hours before my scheduled wakeup. And this certainly isn’t at a frequently visited location

Beyond using Significant Location Apple is a little vague but here is their other statement:

It is available when Charge Limit is set to 100 percent. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80 percent in certain situations. Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimized Battery Charging activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged.
