My Photo collection is over 300GB so I've had to store in standard folders on an external hard drive and stop using iPhoto due to not having enough local space on my MacBook. When I heard about the new Photos app I was thrilled. I love the idea that I can start using my computer to store "optimized" versions of my photos and not worry about running out of hard drive space. However, when I started copying my photos back to my MacBook I started quickly running out of space again. Only a quarter of the way through the process I'm now down to 19GB and I don't want to keep going if "optimizing" means my drive space only gets freed up when I'm down to the last few Gigs. I have a very fast Internet connection and the iCloud sync process is complete, but so far my photos library is 120GB and grows every time I add to it. So, here are my questions:
1) When you chose to "optimize" your photos on a Mac, how many Gigs will Photos let your hard drive space go down to before it starts deleting originals to clear space?
2) If I have 300GB of photos on an external HD and only have 50GB free on my Macbook how to I import all of my photos without running out of space?
