We are building or graphic design business and need to make some upgrades to our mid 2011 iMac i7, 32gb ram, 1TB internal HDD. Currently the OS (and primary apps like Final Cut and CS6) runs off the internal HDD, and or libraries (photo, video etc) are on a Drobo.
I am in the process of upgrading, and will displace the Drobo with a Lacie 5Big Thunderbolt 10TB drive. The Drobo will then be used solely for backups. I will be able to setup the 5Big for maximum speed in Raid 0, and forgo the redundancy and let the Drobo back it up.
Here is my question: For the best results, am I better off making the 5Big the boot disk, or will I see better results with an external Thunderbolt SSD (such as a Seagate GoFlex Plus with Samsung 840 256gb SSD). The 5Big is faster (700+MB/s) than what I'm seeing most get with the SSDs (350-400MB/s).
I am unsure if OSX responds better to having a separate isolated boot disk just for the OS and apps. Perhaps the 700MB/s is total overkill anyhow for the OS?
I can afford the 5Big and an SSD setup, but that reaches end of my budget.
