option to airdrop with legacy devices missing in 10.10.4?

i no longer get the "don't see who you're looking for" option when trying to airdrop with my 2011 mbp. is anyone else having this issue?

the older mbp is running the el capitan beta, which i was thinking might be the issue, but shouldn't my current mac at least show the option to look for legacy devices?
