Damn, I had no idea that Oracle owned Sun Microsystems, and therefore Java!

So is their gripe that Google merely used java?

Is this just patent trolling?

Likely that because Google implemented their own Java clone, that they infringed patents.

Android does not actually use "normal" Java. Google wrote their own Java like system.

honestly I had though Java had gotten kicked open source but guess I was wrong.

I knew one of the fears of when Oracle bought out Sun and got Java that it would get destroyed in all the patent crap and what not.

Btw you link does not work.

Companies Trolling each other, never, now could that be.

Next quarter may be a good quarter for Oracle.

I wouldn't consider this a patent trolling. Oracle spent some pretty decent cash on Sun and as such are entitled to Sun's intellectual property.

Oracle sucks soooo bad. Must need some revenue. Seems like all their licensing income would be enough...guess not.

Not sure what you mean. I don't like Oracle, but they sure've been quite successful.

I was asking if there was merit to this or if it was just patent trolling, not making a statement.

payback is a bitch

This sounds like corporate politics - wonder if this is under encouragement from apple - do apple/oracle share board members?

Are there any details on the patent violations? There's no way this is simply for using Java. Is this a MS JVM type issue?

I wonder how Eric Schmidt feels about this.

From Eric Schmidt's wiki

He joined Sun Microsystems in 1983, led its Java development efforts and rose to become Chief Technology Officer.

The problem is that if Oracle wins, everybody who uses Java looses....

I teach basic IP law and this is not good. Software patents are a very, very bad thing.

I have no love for Google or Oracle but once something like this sets a precedence its very bad..

WTF.

The big deal about Java was how open it was. But that was when Sun was independent.

This really does suck for the whole industry if Oracle is going to start trying to close down java.

Well, license it and you're fine. It's just bad that Sun let the usage go pretty much free for a while (from what it seems) and now you have Oracle who doesn't care who it attacks.

One of the reasons I liked Sun better; they played nicer with open source groups near the end. I was never a huge Oracle fan, especially after the takeover of their rival of sorts, and the subsequent bastardization of their products like ZFS.

But hey, they gotta make money somehow. Since most of Java is under GNU, its probably the JVM or something in order to extract a licensing fee.
