Looking at the MacBook Air 15". Need a custom from Apple. Is there any benefit in waiting for the price to go down online. Or is it likely to remain at current ? Assume you cant get anything other than base set up on third party supplies like Amazon.

Just order it.
I also debated about this, and even looked to see if private sellers were having some bids.
Just ordered a 16/512 GB in silver. Now I have to wait almost to weeks for delivery, because I was holding off. I'm now at peace and don't have that internal struggle "Do I wait? What if it goes on sale in a few months? What if there's a better machine next year? And what if they fix midnight coating next year?"

I picked mine 2 month later after release open box from BB for 935 - the air m1 512gb priced at 1200.
It turned out to be almost all time low.
I expect to have the similar savings on Air 15 as well - around 265 discount from full price is what is reasonable to expect as a maximum drop until 1-2 years from now.

Ps. Apologies misread your comment. There is only a chance of catching-15% off full price in the refurbished section 6-12 month later. That is basically it for custom order discounts. BH will have deals as well but that is YMMV on timing and pricing.

Open box doesn't permit adding Apple Care, does it?!

So, that's another consideration that could matter to many buyers.

Open box is also *somewhat* the luck of the draw — was it a simple return — and thus like new — or was there an issue for the first (or second) buyer?

I'm not sure where you live but basically from my area all the stores constantly have two configurations in stock. They have the base models and the 16GB/1TB model, which is what I got. My struggle is that any 24GB variant is a two-week wait at least.

It has 2 options.
One if you buy fairly recent open box under 60 days, you can buy apple care from apple.
If it is past 60 days of activation then you can only buy from bestbuy.

If you wait long enough it will show up on Apple official refurbished store.... but that'll be a few more months away. Frankly, if you need it now, order it now! It's a great computer.
