How about this strategy?
Order 2 phones (me and wife) online whenever I can make myself get up.
Go back to bed.
Get up at a civilized hour, make coffee and hit mall Apple Store. If I can get one then and there I'll cancel order. Walk out with new phones.
If I can't get one in person I'll have to be patient.

As of now there isn't one person at my NC mall.

Dumb.

You don't when it will cancel your online order.
You don't know when you will get your upgrade back.

The order will cancel before they set up the new one in the store. Apple employee said it takes 20 minutes. Don't know what you mean by the upgrade but I'm returning direct to verizon by mail.

If you wake up at 5 to order online you aren't going to get one, Unless 5 is 12:01 pst. Waking up a civilized hour to go to the Apple store will also leave you empty handed. Rethink your strategy sir.

5 is 2pst. For the iP 5 I know there was in store stock at 11 though don't know about size/carrier. For my 4s I ordered online at 6am (3pst) and had it in 2 days.

I highly doubt you will be given the choice of store pickup during initial release. All local stock will be first come, first served to satisfy people who waited in line.

I'm just skeptical because of all the reports of low supply that you may have to wait a few weeks.

I hear you but until phones start moving out the door we have no way of knowing if supply reports will reflect US reality.
