Carrier Ordered AT&T iphone 6 for store pickup, can i pay full price in store?

So I was able to place a store pickup iphone 6 just now, but I don't wanna be under the contract, can i pay full price in store? has anyone successfully done this? I called Apple, they said even if I pay full price, I will still be under the contract with AT&T. :(
