Afternoon all,

Like so many others, I've ordered my MBA 2020 i7, 16Gb, 512Hb machine about a week ago, but due to NZ being on lockdown, it's probably not arriving til 1/5, but I'm eagerly waiting.

That's given me some time to consider what sort of monitor to get to replace my old Apple LED 24inch monitor.

Before I go any further, it's worth explaining that I have eye problems, which in short, means I only have one "good" eye (6/18 acuity) with limited peripheral vision. I've found my 24inch Apple display, iPad displays, and iMacs to be particularly easy to see - particularly the Retina ones, which seem to have amazing contrast and clarity. I almost always use my MBA attached to an external display.

When I look at most other branded new monitors, I find it difficult to see the edges of most panels as the picture seems to only be clearer in the centre where I'm focused. I don't know why, but I'm told that an IPS display may be best suited to resolving this. Does anybody know if this is true?

I mainly use my MBA for the following and Usually always attached to an external display

By day -
Virtual Machiens - yeah, Windows and Linux on a 2013 MBA - yes, this is my day job - Office Apps, Chrome, EDI tools, command-line, text editors etc etc.

By night-
Music composition / production - this is my hobby - Sibelius, some virtual instruments, Garageband - I tend to use more hardware than software. Web Browsing / mail / blah blah blah

My Wishlist
  • Display is very clear and easy to read across the whole panel when sitting directly in front.
  • Size - 27 - 32 inches - too big and I'll need to keep twisting my head around to see each side of the panel
  • Retina?? I have found the Retina displays to easy to read - certainly the iPad and iMac displays are very readable.
  • HDMI / DP
  • Adjustable - I tend to move the monitor on its stand to find the best position based on what I"m doing at the time.
  • Cost isn't so much of a deal breaker

What Monitor recommendations do you have, or what types of panel should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

I resecently purchased a pair of HP x25s. They’re fantastic. I had to get something new as my old monitors were causing eye strain. As I could be sitting at my computers for 12-16 hours depending if I’m studying after work (I also work from home permenantly, not just because of current situation). They cost €220 a pop but tick most of your requirements, potentially on the smaller side if you’re looking for 28-32. I never would have gone with HP monitors before but these are fantastic. Incredibly sharp! And zero eye strain since I got them. I was told I needed glasses for computer work now, but since I got these I barely have to use the glasses. Worth a look.

(Edit) I’m not a gamer, they just happen to be gamer monitors.
