I've always pre-ordered by just choosing the Verizon model. Today on the Apple Store I noticed you can buy an Unlocked version, which says you can just activate later. This seems like the simplest way, instead of going through the hassle of entering all the carrier info and plan screens.

So my question is... Is it that simple? If I order an unlocked version, do I simply put my current SIM card in it, and I'll be all set to go? No extra hoops or anything?

And if that's the case, what is the point of ordering a Verizon-specific version (for example)?

This year iPhone only has one modem supplier which is the same across all devices in the US.

Verizon may have their carrier deal or financing option unless you want to go through Apple financing/IUP.

Theoretically there is no difference this year as apparently all the phones are the same internally.
