Organisation of Masters and Versions in Aperture?

Thinking of getting Aperture,

When I import the masters from my camera, it saves them in the Aperture folder. But when I edit the masters (sharpen, etc.) how are the edited versions organised? Are they organised in a stack eg. the master as the "pick" and the edited versions of the master in the stack?

I'm not talking about how it is stored as a file structure but how it looks in the Aperture window.
