I have the original 8g iphone running 1.1.4 thaat i have unlocked and jailbrocken. I am considering updating the os version and still would lilke to use service provider other then AT&T. Please help me with the following:

1. What is the highest version of the OS that i can go to on the original iphone?
2. What will i gain by upgrading to that version?
3. If i upgrade, what tool do i use to unlock/jailbreak the iphone?
4. Two years ago, when i got the phone, unlocking and jailbreaking were two separate processes, is it still the case or is it the same process now?
5. Any additional advise/information i will need to make a decision?

Thanks for your help

1) 3.1.3
2) Copy and paste, uhm can't think of what else the iPhone 2g can do, no mms
3)Jailbreakme.com will work, other things such as ultrasnow will work for unlocking I think
4) All can be achieved using ultrasnow/redsnow, can't remember which
5) Go for the update, you might lose some snappiness though.

1. 3.1.3
2. going from 1.1.4, you'll get over 200 new features (its difficult to list specifics)
3. redsn0w, spirit
4. I'm not sure, maybe someone else can answer that

I feel like 1.1.4 was the last time the original iPhone ran efficient, with every major update (2.0. 3.0) it got slower and slower, but not unusable.

1) 3.1.3 (OS 4 not supported)
2) The new OS versions have been more secure to vulnerabilities and capable for better apps
3) Jailbreakme, PwangeTool, or the Sn0ws
4) Still the same
5) None right now that I can think of

5) If you jailbreak then you can get even more 3.1.3 features like MMS, video recording, etc.

The orginal iPhone uses an unlocking tool called bootneuter. You can update to 3.1.3 then use any of the jailbreaking methods listed. When you are in cydia search for boot neuter and install and run that. It will jailbreak your device for you.

Wrong.

You can download video recording apps from Cydia. Read the post you're calling out first before looking dumb.

He said features from 3.1.3,
But depends on how you read it.
Also wasnt Cycorder just for the iPhone 3G??

The video recording would be the same as as the 3G as both hardware is the same apart from battery and 3G radio in the 3G

Original 8G iphone upgrade - followup

Thank you all for your help!
If i upgrade to 3.1.3 and unlock it, but not jailbreak, will i be able to use apps from Apple store?

actually the 3G did take better photos than the 3G..... so there was something relating to the camera that was improved, therefore the video recording would be slightly better on the 3G than the 2G

Yes you can use most apps apart from the growing number of OS4 only apps. I don't think you can unlock the phone exclusively without jailbreaking too. They tend to come together as a package. May be wrong.

I disagree. The full screen photos from both a 2G and 3G look pretty much the same in terms of quality to me. The 3G I had didn't seem noticeably better at recording video with cycorder either, aka lousy too.
