I got my hands on 2 of the first releases of Apple TVs and was wondering has anyone still use them and if its easy to mod them?

I still have it, but do not use anymore.
As it is essentially a Mac Mini with very old OS X (10.4 Tiger if memory serves), you can convert it to either a Mini (install full Tiger and replace the FrontRow UI with OS X standard Desktop) or install drivers/software from OS X.
The mod I undertook immediately was to replace the 40GB HDD with the largest PATA-drive available - WDC Caviar Black 320GB.
My only hack I did was to enable composite output, because back in the day I did not have a TV with either component or HDMI input.
Oh, and yes - I installed the ssh and ftp from OS X install disk to be able to directly log in and access filesystem over LAN.
Today, I would not spend much time on it. And one more thing - it runs so hot, you can use it to fry an egg, if you want to :D
