I was at a thrift store and saw a original iMac for $50. They let me test to see if it still worked and it it came on and booted into Mac OS 9.2.2 so being a Apple fanboy I purchased it on the spot.

However, I'm having some problems. The computer seems to be locked down pretty secure, I noticed that it was once used in a school and that is perhaps why.

I was wanting to update it to OS X 10.0 but any attempts are futile. Is there any utility disc I could burn that would let me just wipe the entire hard drive? Or something like that?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

The original iMac will run Panther. Do you have a Panther CD?

PRAM battery good? Can you boot a OS9 or 10.x disc with the 'c' key?

That model uses Open Firmware.

There could be an existing Open Firmware password to prevent booting from anything but the HDD. You'll need to disable that.
Force Removing Password Protection

1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.

2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

Sounds like a fun project. Good luck!
