Original iPhone for a backup AT&T phone?

Where I travel, Sprint service is rather spotty, so I sometimes keep an AT&T GoPhone with me in case I need to contact someone.

Would I have any problems buying an original iPhone and keeping it in my car for this? I could also use it as a music player. I understand it would be outdated and apps would be limited, but it might be cool to have an original iPhone and it would be less expensive.

Any other suggestions?

This would work just fine. iPhones work just fine with AT&T go phone sims.
