My friend gave me an original iPhone, it is an American iPhone but would it work in the UK if I unlocked it? I'm planning on selling it as I have an iPhone4.

Thanks

It does not have to be jailbroke just unlocked to allow a non-AT&T SIM to work.

Also, not the original iPhone only supports EDGE data.

Not necessarily true in the UK or most of the rest of Europe. Networks can and will unlock them, usually for a fee. Different networks have different criteria.

A network cannot unlock an iPhone that is not a part of it's network. Example: Orange cannot unlock an AT&T iPhone. Thus, in response to the OP's question, a jailbreak is needed.
