Original iPhone (using as ipod) Apps won't work

I am using a handed down original iphone as an ipod touch. At one point I had full functionality, including all the apps. I recently upgraded the software in the iphone and now all the app store apps are not loading (crash right after appearing).

Any tips on how to fix this? I've searched the forum and can't find anything for this specific problem.

Help please.
