Original iPhone... which Jailbreak & Unlock

Hi all,
my friend just came to me and said that he wanted to update his jailbroken/Unlocked 1G iPhone. I checked his firmware and he's on 1.1.4!
Ive been jailbreaking and unlocking since the original iPhone but im now using a 3GS and havent really been keeping up to date with how to safely update and maintain unlock on the 1G.

Whats the best and safest way to upgrade to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3?
Pawnage tool custom firmware?
or
Redsnow after official restore?

With the 2G is fairly easy and you can always JB and unlock it.
