Original iPhone won't hang up call

After I dial a phone number on my 1st generation iphone the screen goes blank. I can have a conversation just fine but I cannot hang up/mute/use keyboard - there is just a blank screen. I have restored the phone numerous times to no avail. Does anyone have any advice? I'd like to get a new version but am trying to hold out until the next iphone release...THANKS!!

Try another restore but dont restore it from a backup of your old phone.
That might do it.

sorry to sound "iphone ignorant" but how exactly do you do a restore not using your old phone? And does doing so erase contacts/apps/etc?
