Mac Book & iphone has been acting weird lately...lots of little apps running according to the activity monitor that i don't recognise. The highlighted icon (inside the white square) seems new to me and i can't turn the app on or off or figure out why it is there. Any clues please?

See if there is an startup item (in the System Preferences -> Accounts) that may match the app and delete that.

You could also look in Activity Monitor.app and check if you see processes that could match to learn what the name of it may be so you would have a better chance to delete it.
