Spam filtering is typically done on the server side to minimize bandwidth usage. It would be a big problem to download tons of spam to the iPhone on the limited network capacity of EDGE/3G.

Well, I assume the first poster was lookingfor the spam detection that Apple has in their Mac OS X Mail client.
I know when I first got my iPhone, I was astonished how much spam I was getting. Mac OS X Mail just made it vanish. I was kind of sad that Apple didn't include it on the iPhone.
I had to take extreme measures to kill the spam at the source before it got through my mail servers. Now, I barely get anything, so I'm not really looking for it on the iPhone Mail client any longer. Still would be nice to have.
As for bandwith, many spam detectors can identify spam just on the header, so it wouldn't have to download the whole message to detect some spam.
