OS on external drive

How do you get an operating system on an external drive? Yeah, I'm a newb! Thanks,

Well, you can use the install disk to install on an external drive
Or, you can clone a current system to an external drive (SuperDuper/Carbon Copy Cloner)

You will just need to set your startup disk in system preferences to access it
