I've been looking to replace an old Dell Latitude with something, probably a Macbook Pro or Mini. Most used Macs that I've looked at come with Mojave installed. I'm interested in hearing about people's experiences with versions of the OS after High Sierra, which is what I use every day on an old iMac. For the most part, High Sierra has been solid and reliable. My impression is that there have been many complaints about the versions that followed. One reason I want to move completely away from Windows is that I grew tired of the constant tinkering and babying that Windows systems require. I certainly don't want to move into an unstable OS. I understand that during this time period there have been dramatic changes in hardware and software, and these account partially for the problems. Nonetheless, I try the best I can with limited funds to get reliable tools.

There's no right or wrong answer. Just your experience with versions of the OS.

10.13 High Sierra
10.14 Mojave
10.15 Catalina
11.0 Big Sur
12.0 Monterey

I am a laggard. By the time I usually upgrade, Apple is one or two versions ahead. I upgrade for security purposes -- not to get the latest and greatest feature. Therefore, I have really not experienced the kind of instability and compatibility issues that early adopters typically experience. For me, High Sierra was good. Mojave was even better. Catalina is proving to be just as good as Mojave though. With Catalina and later just be aware of 64 bit compatibility issues and you will be fine.
