OS X 10.3.9 cannot play videos

I can not play any video at all! I can view streamed content on the web, but I keep getting an error message when I try to open a video file from my mac. At first I thought it was a codec problem, but I've downloaded all sorts and it still doesn't work. When I load a video file to quicktime, vlc or divx player it always fails. Sometimes I can hear audio from vlc, but no picture. I've tried refreshing disk permission,but to no avail.

If I understand correctly, you cannot play any movie files, either in QT Player, VLC etc. from your local HD, but can stream from the web..??

What happens if you try to play a movie from different volume, i.e. external HD, AFP volume or CD/DVD?

Could it be that your filesystem is corrupt / damaged?
Just to check, you can fire up Disk Utility and do a "Verify Disk".

What type of file are you trying to play? .avi? .mov? .wmv?

Looks like you have might have an old version of Perian (0.5) installed. Perian is currently version 1.1. With Perian installed, you shouldn't need Divx and having both installed may cause conflicts with certain types of avi files.

In any event, you should first try and see if you have a conflict with one of your Quicktime components. First, make sure Quicktime isn't open and go to /Library/QuickTime and remove all non-Apple branded components (Perian, Divx, WMV import (aka FlipforMac). Try a regular Quicktime .mov file and see if it plays. If it plays, try adding back each component, one at a time, making sure to close Quicktime first before you do and continue trying playing different videos. See if that narrows the problem down to one of the third-party components.

I've verified the disk and its fine.

I've had a little breakthrough though. I can play .mov files that I've created through imovie in quicktime.

However, .avi .wmv and .mpg just don't work (in any player)! everytime I open a player from one of these types file, the application closes itself down. I tried uniistalling VLC, Flip4Mac and Divx and the same thing happens when I play through quicktime
