Hi i have a macbook pro early 2012 i believe, the one that was introduced with thunderbolt. I recently downgraded to os x 10.6.8 from maverick because it was making my computer super slow after upgrading. But since downgrading to 10.6.8, my wifi keeps disconnecting, it says its connected but i have to keep turning airport on and off to get internet again. Anyone have any advice on fixing this? i have tried almost everything i have seen online.

If it is a 2012 model, it's a Mid-2012 and it shipped with 10.7 Lion. You can't run a version of OS X that is older than that with which it was shipped. The hardware is different.

i double checked and my macbook is an early 2011 model. I feel like i am going to have to upgrade to yosmite even though i only have 4gb ram

Ah, Ok - that one did come with Snow Leopard 10.6, so that's good. You can't get Mavericks as it's no longer an option in the App Store however you can get either 10.7 or 10.8 if you do not want to get to Yosemite at this time.
However... honestly, WiFi connection drops can be just as easily caused by WiFi interference and won't matter what OS you're running if that's the case. If you have more than a half dozen WiFi networks shown on your WiFi menu, you might consider changing your WiFi channel on your router.

Here's a YouTube video that might shed some light on it. It's a Windows video but it's just for the principle.

i change the channel everyday in order to fix my disconnect problem. This only started happening after downgrading to 10.6.8. Every other technology in my house works fine with the wifi. Even my friends laptop works fine. The problem usually happens after the computer goes to sleep.

Power management, perhaps. SMC reset might help.

Just be sure you follow for your Mac - which I believe has a built in battery so the power adapter will have to be connected.

I just went through a protracted battle trying to convince a MacMini 1,1 to connect with my access point. Absolutely NONE of the "common techniques" worked - none (and I tried them all). What DID work:

  • Log into the router control panel and disable security completely.
  • Open the network settings for Airport on the Mac and pick on the access point name. If you get prompted for a password, try "Join other networks" with authentication "None" and "remember this network" checked, then type in the name of the router. It should connect without incident.
  • Turn off Airport on the Mac. Turn authentication back on in the router.
  • Try to connect again from the Mac. Enter the password when prompted and it should connect without incident.
I have not the slightest clue why this worked, but it was a welcome result after hours of headbanging.
