OS X 10.8 ML: change alert sounds?

Hi guys

I was wondering if any of u knew how to change the alert sound when a notification pops up? I tried changing the alert sound in system preferences under "Sound", but that didn't work. I guess that's a setting for system pop-ups rather than notifications. But the sound that is used for notifications is just horrible (I think it's Basso).

So please help me out :D
