Sometimes when I start up my MBP, the sound is disabled. It has a circle with the diagonal line in it at the buttom of the speaker icon when you press one of the volume knobs.

The fix I found is simply take my headphones, plug it in my MBP, remove it and then the sound works then.

Is this an OS X problem, or do I need to call Applecare?

Try blowing air into the headphone port. There's a sensor inside there that may be covered with dirt.

your headphone jack is dirty. the speakers are disabled because the sensor is sticking and it thinks you have headphones still plugged in.
