I know that there are many alternatives to Finder.

1st: what have you used and what are the features you like about it?

2nd: what's good that is free and what allows you to browse directories that you can't in Finder but have to in Terminal, like /private/var/folders/ etc.

You can do this in the finder by using "Go to Folder..." Shift Command G.

I'm trying out TotalFinder right now, there are still a few bugs but it's looking very promising overall.
 
You can also open a hidden directory in Finder by navigating to it in the terminal, then running:

Well that keyboard shortcut was easy enough...thanks.

Besides tabs, what do you think differentiates TotalFinder from Finder? Their video mentions mostly the tab feature.
 
I use Pathfinder This is probably one of the most popular finder replacements that includes features like cut and pasting of files that you cannot do in the Finder.

I've used this for a long time and this current version is very solid, feature rich and good performance.
