Hello there, sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't consider it "news" or "software"

I have a Maxtor 320GB USB HDD that I had for a few months now.

OS X would not recognize it on firewire, but easily recognized it via USB

Over time, I moved my entire iTunes library over to it, and use it alot, but now there appears to be a problem

While in use, it suddenly dismounts from the system. The HDD is still powered on, all cables connected, but it is no longer mounted. Furthermore, each time it does this, the iMac crashes, and completely shuts off.

upon rebooting, and rebooting the HDD, it mounts again, and works fine for a seemingly random amount of time

Does anyone know a possible reason for this? It is nowhere near full, and I don't remember and recent changes to OS X that may have done it

I take it this is one of the "One Touch" line with both FW and USB?

I have a Maxtor OneTouch Plus 500 that supports FW400 and USB2 and it's been fine via FW so if FW never worked and USB is now only working intermittently, it could be a problem with the interface board in the enclosure. Is your unit still under warranty with Maxtor?

unfortunately, No..

Alright I may have solved the problem.

The firewire still doesn't work, it just shows unknown device

Turns out I recently deleted Maxtor OneTouch Manager app

It must have had some drivers too.

it's been mounted all night, but I'll find out for certain by lunch or so (that's the longest it lasted). I also stopped using is so heavily, iTunes now runs off the internal HDD.
