OS X Maverick stops screen saver and wont sleep

I have an older iMac. Running OS Maverick. My monitor wont sleep and screen saver works only for a few seconds then wakes up. The only way I can get the monitor to sleep is to restart the iMac and run no apps. Anyone else having the same issues? Any help would be helpful.
