OS X Missing Icons

Hi

I have searched at length and been on phone to Apple support for over 2 hours in a hope to fix this. My System Icon in Finder (Network, User, Applications, Documents, Music, Pictures) are all gone, and there is only the words. In the application folder about half the installed applications do not have icons, but only text.

On my desktop numerous folders (downloads etc) do not have icons, but only text. All jpg files have icons.

Very strange, I have tried the following:
Removed caches folder from library and restarted finder
Numerous restarts
Created new user account
Can not even paste a new icon over the Get Info section.

I have icon problems sometimes. The solution I use, which has worked for me, is to find the offending file, bring up its Get Info window, select the icon, and hit delete. This usually forces Mac OS X to refresh the icon to what it should be.

I have tried that, but for some reason i am unable to even select the blank icon in Get Info. There is no icon whatsoever to delete??

Apple support suggested a clean format but that seems rather drastic!

What causes this to happen?

Sounds like your icon caches are corrupt. A cache cleaner program should fix it if this is the cause. (I'd suggest one, but I don't know the names of any good ones )

Missing icons everywhere

Ive got the same problem since upgrading to lion.

icons missing in menu bar
in mail
most apps

i have to roll the mouse over empty icons & wait for the tool tip to appear!

any ideas

help!
