I'm looking to create a RAID1 setup. I run a Early 2008 MBP, and now that I'm out of school it's usually connected to external monitor and keyboard/mouse. I'd like to create a RAID1 for BackUp/Archive of Digital Media (Family Videos, Pictures, HI-8 Transfers, etc.). I choose RAID1 so I can just have dual HDDs and have them mirrored so it's more reliable (If I'm not mistaking?)

I was looking at these 2 options in my head.

1. Have a Software Raid via OS X and buy a Dual-Bay External Enclosure and use it via USB.

2. Buy a dedicated dual-bay enclosure with built-in RAID1.

Because it's more of archiving data, I plan on only running it when I need to Read/Write data from it and otherwise keeping it powered off.

I'd like to know what are some Pro/Con/Suggestions/Limitations/Corrections/etc. of both setups and which one would be a better choice.
