Hello,
We have approximately 100 Mac clients. We have a Mac Server with a 40TB Thunderbolt Drive Array. The only purpose of this server is to provide backup to our Mac clients. All clients have been setup to use Time Machine over the network to our Mac server running the Time Machine server. Each client is allocated 70GB of space, and the clients are only configured to backup the "Users" folder (per client, "Applications", "Library" and "System" are excluded).
All clients are backing up successfully, but we have two issues.
1) Opening the Server app on the server, clicking Time Machine, and clicking "Backups" leads to a spinning wheel for anywhere between 5-60 minutes. When the backup list successfully loads, it indicates most clients have backed up in the last few hours. We have some machines that are a few days behind, leading to part #2 of my question...
2) Many clients backup "very" slowly. We witnessed several users last night who had under 100 mb to backup, yet the estimated time is 11 hours. We checked Activity monitor on the Mac server, and the maximum transfer speed is showing as less than 1 MB/s. Often it barely exceeds 500 KB/s on the server.
Just to see if it's a network bottleneck, I copied a 2GB to the Mac server (while there were over 35 machines actively backing up with Time Machine), and that 2GB file copied to the TB array in less than 1 minute.
When we originally established this Time Machine server in late December, over the course of 24 hours we added over 50 computers and all completed their initial backup in less than 48 hours (clients ranged from 20GB - 60GB of data).
Rebooting the server helps a bit, but not much.
Does anyone have any suggestions to troubleshoot this further? The server is running Sierra and all clients are running El Capitan.
Thanks
