I have a .IMG of Windows XP which I burned at the slowest speed allowable (10x) with Toast but when I insert the disc into my Mac I get the error message "the disk you inserted was no readable by this computer". I also tried it on a Windows machine and I'm getting a similiar error. I know the .IMG is good as I mounted it virtually with Toast and it works fine. I've also tried several other .IMG and .ISO and I have the same issue. What is wrong here? Is the drive in my MBP dead? Is there anyway I can copy the contents to my USB flash drive and get Boot Camp to install Windows that way?

I don't think there's any thing wrong with your drive. It sounds like it's the way you're burning the image. If the IMG or ISO won't work either in your Mac or a Win machine, it's more than likely a bad burn.

As for using a flash drive to install XP on your Mac, it won't work. Boot Camp will only start the Windows installer from either a CD or DVD. I don't know of a work around.

If you have an image of XP, why not use the original CD to do the install?

Regards.
