OS10.6 restore F4/F5 volume control shortcuts

I've just installed OS 10.6.4 on my Mac Book. The old keyboard shortcuts "apple key" + F4/F5 for decrease/increase volume no longer work.

I've tried selecting "use all F1, F2 keys as standard function keys" in System Preferences > Keyboard but that makes no difference.

Could anyone help?
