OSX 10.11.2 not restarting / shutting down.

Hi all,

Currently on a rMBP (early)2013. Im having a problem that I can't do any updates or even restart my MacBook unless i hold down the power button, making update restarts impossible. Telling the computer to shutdown only makes it sit on the wallpaper with nothing else on screen. The dock is hidden and by bringing my mouse to the bottom of the screen i can still use the dock.

Any suggestions?
