Hiya,

My OSX printer subsystem has just stopped working :(

This is a G4 1.33mhz iBook with 10.4.9

Pressing the icon for 'print one copy' works in TextEdit and Word, but pressing apple-P to bring up the printer menu hangs the whole machine.

What can I do?

I went to Printer Setup Utility and selected the function Reset Printing System, as recommended by Apple but that did nothing, not even after restarting.

I also tried Repair Permissions, but after 3 hours, it was still running, so I aborted it and restarted, and tried it again, but after another 2 hours, it was still running, with almost no disk activity or CPU activity, so I aborted that too.

EDIT: I've made it worse :(

I tried following the instructions here exactly

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070227212742511

and now my printer subsystem is borked. Any attempt to print at all hangs my laptop. Reset Printing System clears all the printers, Bonjour sees the HP printer, but clicking on it hangs the system too.

Eeek! Do I need to wipe and reinstall Tiger? :( :(
