osx 10.5.8 loosing connection to vpn

Hi all
I have installed a vpn on a wrt54g and have setup the above machine to connect to this vpn. It is working ok.
If I turn off the macbook pro it loses the connection and so I have to connect every time. It is alo the case if it goes to sleep.
Would anyone of you be able to give me a hint how I could fix this?

Are you using vpn client software? and which provider service are you using?

I use open vpn on a "ddwrt" router. Another machine, which is xp pro, it works flawless(ibvpn) till now.

do you use router? not all vpn provider support it

I use a router and the vpn provider supports it and openvpn is installed.
