OSX 10.5.8 Mail download problems, force quit

I am running 10.5.8 on an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook. When I try to download email, the first 20 or so messages download quickly and then Mail freezes and nothing more will download. This happens every time. When Mail has frozen it will not quit except by Force Quit.

Any help appreciated,
