A friend of mine has a 2009 iMac presently running OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard). He has just purchased a new printer that requires at least version 10.6 (Snow Leopard), as there are no drivers for the new printer that he has purchased. I have a Snow Leopard "Install DVD". Can I just put this in his machine & upgrade, or will his machine be somehow compromised? When I click on software updates on his machine it advises that he is up to date.

Can depend on which type of "Install DVD" you have if it is a restore your machine type that Apple used to ship with the machine then it will not work unless it came from identical machine. If it is the retail install disk type then it will work on any machine.

No matter what OS update you install, try to make a backup of your friend's drive first.

10.6.8 is a solid and stable OS.

Beyond that, I'd recommend 10.8.5, also.
