osx 10.6.8 attached to external vga monitor hangs @ grey screen. PLEASE HELP.

osx 10.6.8 attached to external vga monitor hangs @ grey screen. PLEASE HELP.

MACBOOK screen unusable.

used to load in a time frame ranging from 15 minutes to 6 1/2 hours
sometimes would not load finder
or allow wired/wireless internet access
or have memory to access files on programs like ableton
or allow programs like ableton to work.

the macbook has not loaded at all in the last 2 1/4 days.

macbook given to me by brother who is o/s & am awaiting osx disk.
have d/l 10.6.8 file & have on usb as an iso file

seem to think that i can't safeboot with wireless keyboard, can't open external monitor w/o closing lid on macbook.

I am not a programming/computer expert but am learning since this problem arose, can anybody please assist??

surprise, surprise.....no help has materialised yet.
